Basement Waterproofing & Removing Tree Roots In Drains

The basement waterproofing industry is growing by leaps and bounds every year, and there's a simple reason why: because water damage and flooding is one of the most expensive disasters that can beset a home. By installing a (relatively) simple waterproofing system in your home, you might be able to avoid a catastrophic flood, and also solve simpler problems like wet walls, mold, mildew and cracking.

The most important element of a basement waterproofing system is the footer drain tiles that circle the foundation of your home. These drains are what move excess ground water away from your basement and prevent hydrostatic pressure from building up against your walls and floor. Over time, this pressure can result in cracks, moisture and even leaks and flooding.

Unfortunately, just because footer drains are installed brand new and functional doesn't mean that they will stay that way. Many different things can lead to blocked, clogged, broken and cracked drains over the years. One of the biggest culprits, especially in rainy areas, are tree roots.

Removing tree roots from sewer drains is one of the best things you can do to guarantee that they function properly and have a long life. You'd be amazed at the small opening that a tree root needs to get into your pipes, and once it's there it will grow larger year after year until it is removed.

Fortunately, getting roots out of your footer drain and main sewer line isn't usually a difficult thing to do. There are plenty of local basement waterproofing companies, plumbing contractors and drain cleaners who can get the job done with a sewer snake auger. The real problem is when you need to clean out footer drains that aren't accessible via a cleanout; in this case, you'll probably have to excavate in order to reach the pipe, which can be a costly endeavor.
